Advantages of using a database.

A database surely has great advantages over a traditional record keeping system. From ease of access to user access control and security to efficient storage and manipulation, a database system is ideal for use by organizations and companies. How can a database management system benefit the UGBC library?

  1. A DBMS for UGBC library would offer many benefits if implemented. Technology is everything these days and the more we cope with the dynamic world we live in, the better or even simpler life gets.
    Advantages:
    1) It will offer simplicity, the system will make things easier in every aspect. For e.g the retrieval of information will be faster and more efficient.
    2) Less storage involved, since the data will be stored digitally, so there is no need for filing cabinets to store large amounts of files
    3) It is flexible in the sense that data is program independent; meaning you can independently use the required data.
    4) Security, for example authorization control using passwords and also data is more secured and backed up on a regular basis.

These are only a few i can think of right now, but there are many more advantages that can be added to this list.

  2. Point number 3 is not very clear. Please explain, possibly giving an example. Also, what about cataloging?

The need for quick access to information is felt more in an academic library than any other, because information is a vital source for learning, teaching and research.

  3. The idea of getting a database is ideal for a library, having a relational database makes it even more better, since the librarian can easily run searches for books from several different criteria’s and in no time provide a student with the book requested. Also, it’s a way to keep track of the books they have….
